Remote Training Collars Help Stop Excessive Barking

Barking is a dog’s natural means of vocal communication. It is instinctive for them to bark, and thus, expecting dogs to never bark is unreasonable.  A dog’s barking can mean a lot of different things – may it be to initiate play, to express positive feelings, to mark a territory, or to express a basic need, among many other things.

However, barking becomes a problem when it becomes a nuisance, too excessive, and inappropriate. It becomes a problem when even your, your neighbors’ and your environment, are negatively affected. It becomes a problem when safety is compromised and sleeping patterns are disrupted.

There are several ways to train dogs to stop excessive barking. One of which is using remote training collars in safely and effectively training dogs to stop excessive and inappropriate barking.

Remote training collars are electronic devices that applies a correction method to a dog’s neck to give them a signal. OurK9 offers a variety of remote training collars for dogs of different sizes. They have 6 remote training collars with several correction methods – vibration, shock, and ultrasonic – and with intensity levels that can be set or controlled.

In using remote training collars to correct excessive and inappropriate barking, here are step that should be taken into consideration and utmost importance.

  • Make sure that you are using the best and most suitable training collar for your dog. OurK9 makes sure that all collars are safe and the most appropriate for each dog, by taking into account the dog’s size, temperament, and barking problem.
  • Read the instructions and the manual of the remote training collar to avoid unnecessary problems along the way.
  • Get your dog used to wearing the collar, without the stimulus yet, at least a week before actually using the collar for training his barking to stop. Before using it for training, let your dog first be comfortable in it while doing everyday activities.
  • Before you start using the remote training collar, make sure that the intensity level is kept at a minimum. Check, double check, and triple check, that the intensity level is at its lowest.
  • Place your dog in an area or a situation that he usually excessively and inappropriately barks. If possible, find varying areas and situations that your dog excessively barks.
  • Ideally, do not let the dog see you. Stay at a distance from your dog, in order to prevent him from associating your presence with the stimulus or correction method. You do not want him to think that it is indeed you that causes this unpleasant sensation when he excessively barks. You want him instead to associate the stimulus and sensation with his bad behavior, that it is his own actions that causes these.
  • When he begins to bark, in a stern voice, give your command to be “Quiet!” and then press the button that would activate the correction method. Release it a moment later. (NOTE: do not exceed three (3) seconds)
  • Repeat this several times. When he stops barking after your command and the stimulus, reward him, for this will further reinforce his behavior of stopping excessive barking. It can be a simple pat on his head, a treat, or a verbal praise.
  • If by the end of the second day, the dog still does not seem to stop barking when you give him the command and press the button, raise the intensity to the next level.
  • Repeat this several times until the dog learns to stop barking even when he hears the “Quiet!” command, and without the correction method.
