Obedience Training for Dogs

Many dogs are often too excited that they seem to have forgotten some manners. They do not come when called, they destroy and much on your rugs, and they keep on barking so loudly and nonstop the neighbors already complained. Dogs bring delight and joy in our lives, but sometimes, their disobedience can be a source of disappointment and annoyance.

Obedience training could have prevented and lessened these kinds of problems. It is focused on making dogs obedient to their dog owners, and can help resolve undesirable and inappropriate behavioral problems. With obedience training, dogs are taught to obey their dog owners on what they are told to do. It covers a wide range of lessons, including basic tricks and demonstration of simple skills.

There several ways obedience training can be implemented. Dogs can be trained for obedience through different techniques, such as using reward systems or using remote training collars. Obedience training can be done at home, or the dog can be trained by a professional trainer.

Nonetheless, however the dogs may be trained, there are a few basic and universal steps to take when undertaking obedience training for dogs:

• Understand how your dog learns. In order to have a clear communication with the dog, it is important to get to know and understand how he learns. Does he learn well through association? Does he learn better through repetition? It is also important to take note in which environment and context the dog learns and trains best.
• Achieve consistency. Dogs get easily confused with inconsistencies, because they learn faster through patterns. What is not allowed, should always be not allowed. For instance, if your dog is not allowed to take a dump inside the house, do not let any instance where you will give in and allow this behavior at any time.
• Make training fun. A happy, fun training is an effective training! Every obedience training session should also include little games and praises in between. In this way, getting bored and not following the training, can be avoided and lessened.
• Always end obedience training on a positive note. In this way, the recency effect means you and your dog may remember how great and fun training has been, and will definitely look forward to the next obedience training session!
• Have realistic expectations. Be patient and do not expect obedience to be achieved overnight. Some commands take a lot of time and repetitions to perfect.

Obedience training is something responsible dog owners want to achieve. Who would not want to have a happy and obedient dog, anyway?
